My family and I would like to welcome you to our 2nd annual bull sale. It will again be an internet based auction conducted by EDJE auction and sale managed by Bill Pelton Livestock. Last year we felt that it was a great success and appreciate all of you that either purchased, bid, and attended our open house at the ranch. It was very humbling.

Again, this year we will be selling 35 yearling bulls as well as 10 heifer calves and 1 bred cow. The bulls represent the top 35 bulls out of 100 bulls born this year on the ranch. We have never picked our bulls strictly on their weaning weights. Rather we pick them on their mother’s attributes and ability to raise a good calf, not necessarily a huge calf every year. Every year we band a lot of bull calves that would easily make great bulls to produce good steers, just not great replacements. And that is what it is all about here at Hould Angus.

As you look through our pedigrees you will quickly notice that we are not a breed by the numbers herd of cattle. I spend a great deal of time throughout the year traveling around looking at cattle that might be of the right kind. I feel that this is a lost tradition among many purebred breeders.  And many put way too much emphasis on the “Numbers” versus actually getting out and looking at cattle.

We are very proud of our cow herd. We have only utilized bulls that are highly proven for their maternal qualities. Our cows are moderate framed and have a very strong ability to stay in production in our environment. The cows must be, most of all fertile, sound and able to withstand our very strict culling criteria on udder quality. This year we preg checked 184 registered mother cows and we had 4 opens. Two of those where coming 3’s that we had purchased from other breeders and the two others where 12 and 14 years old. That was absolutely mind blowing to me as the summer of 2017 was the driest summer on record for Hill County. But also made me realize how well our cows are actually dialed into our environment.

We would like to welcome you all on March 24th, 2018 for an open house sale preview. Lunch will be available, and all bulls will be ready for viewing. The bulls will not be clipped so you will see them as is and ready to go. Also again this year we plan to have all the mothers of the bulls selling around the barn for your inspection. We had a great turn out last year and those that came really appreciated that the mothers were easily viewed for their appraisal.
